ISRC, and why this acronym matters to you.

The International Standard Recording Code (ISRC) lets the industry identify sound recordings and music videos anywhere online or off, in your local market and internationally.

An ISRC identifies the sound recordings and music video recordings (the works themselves) and not the physical products they are delivered on (CDs, DVDs, a digital file, etc) and ISRCs co-exist with the many product catalogue numbering systems that focus on the physical product and its journey through manufacture, distribution and retail. Neither does ISRC identify a digitally distributed package, although sound and music video recordings included in such a package should be identified with an ISRC.

The ISRC system allows any individual or business entity to register to issue ISRCs regardless of their membership, of or standing with, industry associations and other bodies. At last, something you don’t need to be inside the VIP velvet rope to access.

More to follow on ISRCs…
